Marianne North 1830-1890 still holds a special place in the hearts of botanical artists and the

scientific community.  For over 20 years she travelled the world, mainly alone, documenting

mainly in oil painting the intricate detail of plants across the globe.

Her fascinating story begins in the fishing town of Hastings, her home for over 40 years; a place

more renowned for tall huts and an historic battle.

Marianne Norths life's work is celebrated at Kew Gardens at Marianne North Gallery. 

A permanent exhibition of over 800 of her original botanical paintings.  This provides a rich source

of information even today, with the latest plant 'discovery' recognised in her work in 2021 with another plant named in her honour as the first documented image of the Bornean Chassalia species, being given the name Chassalia Northiana.

Marianne North Centre Hastings are encouraging you to celebrate Marianne North's contribution and get involved with your own interpretations.

Miss North was not conventional in her time.  A strong independent woman choosing new materials of the day as her medium, and moving away from traditional botanic art presentation style for the day.  Championing her passion for combining true life observations and and botanic interpretation.  

                                                  We invite you to imagine the works that may have been created in different times or influences.  The Northia                                                    Re-imagined art event is shown on-line, with selected pieces also hung at the inclusive exhibition at the                                                            Marianne North Birthday Celebration we host every year in Hastings.
